Museum Director: April Uprising Shows Bulgarians Succeed When They Act Independently

Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, addressed a BTA-hosted conference on the “150 Years since the April Uprising – 1876” on Thursday.

Shopov framed history not only as a record of the past but also as a guide for future action, emphasizing the necessity of collective progress and avoiding past errors. He reflected on the events of April 30, noting that the local population risked significant upheaval for the sake of future freedom, despite the odds. According to the professor, the mid-19th century saw Panagyurishte boasting a robust civic society, supported by numerous guild associations and commercial establishments dedicated to the common cause.

While acknowledging the insurgents’ understanding that defeating the Ottoman Empire was unlikely, Shopov stressed that the primary goal was to galvanize the populace’s belief in its own strength. The April Uprising, he argued, offers valuable lessons in patriotism that must be interpreted and passed down. Furthermore, he cited the assembly in Oborishte as an early example of statehood and tolerance—values relevant to the contemporary European context.

Shopov asserted that Panagyurishte holds a crucial role in the development of Bulgarian state traditions. The forum, supported by the Panagyurishte Municipality and the local Historical Museum, is part of a broader series of BTA discussions marking the anniversary. This event contributes to the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative, which aims to commemorate significant Bulgarian historical milestones up to 2032.

  1. It’s compelling to hear history presented not just as remembrance, but as a practical guide for future civic action.

  2. What specific lessons from the April Uprising does the director suggest are relevant to contemporary Bulgarian policy?
