On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to stimulate dialogue regarding the anniversary. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, Rector of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Panagyurishte History Museum.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions on the April Uprising revive the memory of martyrs for Bulgarian freedom. He noted that the talks spanned the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized the consensus reached: the necessity of establishing major goals before tackling difficult steps.

BNR Director General Mitev highlighted the media’s crucial role in public opinion formation, arguing that the media must proactively connect with its audience. He advised that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, as history and pride can be manipulated. Prof.

Valchev urged viewing history as a living document, cautioning against mere slogans. He identified three key lessons from 1876: the desire to shape one’s own destiny, the belief in the country’s future, and the importance of trusting the younger generation. Panagyurishte Mayor Gagov suggested the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity, emphasizing that the heroes were ordinary people whose legacy Bulgarians must uphold.

Boyko Vassilev noted that the uprising raises enduring questions relevant to modern Bulgarian public life.
