Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Kiril Valchev, stated that recent talks commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising serve to keep the memory of the martyrs for Bulgaria’s freedom alive. Speaking at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, Valchev addressed the final conference in a series of discussions organized by BTA across several revolutionary districts. The discussions focused on extracting actionable lessons from the April Uprising for contemporary society.
Valchev noted that a central consensus reached was the necessity of establishing clear, overarching goals before undertaking difficult steps toward them. He emphasized that the historical record suggests that perceived failures can ultimately lead to profound successes, citing the path to Bulgarian freedom. Furthermore, Valchev highlighted the significant role of media, asserting that media coverage can powerfully shape public opinion and aid in national preservation, as seen after the April Uprising across Europe.
Drawing from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, Valchev advised that effective leadership requires activity, detachment from personal gain, and the ability to guide followers away from despair. The commemorative events involved extensive tributes and discussions held in multiple locations, marking the historical significance of the uprising. Valchev announced that the discussions will continue internationally in cities such as Bucharest, Belgrade, and Odesa.
Furthermore, he revealed that BTA plans to dedicate the 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media to the theme “Media and Leaders,” building upon the enduring legacy of the April Uprising.
