BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that recent discussions regarding the 1876 April Uprising served to commemorate the sacrifices made for Bulgaria’s freedom. These remarks were made at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the event at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This conference concluded a series of dialogues organized by the bta across various centers of the uprising—including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, Panagyurishte, Ruse, and Giurgiu.
The discussions, moderated by Boyko Vassilev and attended by Prof. Georgi Valchev, focused on extracting actionable lessons from the historical event. Valchev noted that a key consensus reached was the necessity of establishing clear, overarching goals before undertaking complex steps to achieve them.
He emphasized the significant role of media in shaping public opinion, drawing parallels between the impact of the April Uprising across Europe and the potential for modern communication. The talks also drew guidance from Zahari Stoyanov’s writings on Bulgarian uprisings, advising that effective leadership requires activity, dedication to the common good, and the ability to maintain follower morale. Valchev recounted the extensive preparatory events, which began in December with discussions regarding the 1875 committee decision in Giurgiu, and included paying respects at national memorials in Ruse and honoring figures
