On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that recent discussions surrounding the 1876 April Uprising served to commemorate the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. He made these remarks at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by BTA across the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as in Ruse and Giurgiu.

Throughout the conferences, which featured contributions from Rector Georgi Valchev of St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, participants analyzed lessons from the Uprising relevant to the present day. Valchev noted that the consensus reached was the importance of establishing clear, long-term objectives before executing necessary steps.

He highlighted that historical setbacks can ultimately contribute to major successes, drawing parallels to themes of salvation. Furthermore, Valchev emphasized the significant capacity of media platforms to influence public opinion and support national efforts, a dynamic observed after the April Uprising across Europe. The discussions drew on historical sources, including excerpts from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings.

Key leadership lessons cited included the necessity for leaders to remain active, avoid personal gain, and shield followers from despair. Valchev detailed the extensive preparatory events, which included laying wreaths and commemorating figures like Hristo Botev and Vasil Levski at various sites. Looking forward, Valchev announced that BTA plans to continue these discussions internationally in Bucharest, Belgrade, and Odesa.

Moreover, the agency announced that the 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media will focus on “Media and Leaders,”
