PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a motion of no confidence pass against his administration, the primary option for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain in the government, but explicitly outside a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the party would not preclude a scenario where the PNL shifts to the opposition to form an alternative “pole of modernization” with other political groups. Speaking in an interview with Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that reforms must continue regardless of who assumes power.

He highlighted the fiscal improvements since implementing austerity measures ten months prior, noting a 12% increase in public budget revenues against a 3% decrease in expenditure. Bolojan stated that previous years saw the state budget misused by inefficient administrations and for incomplete projects. He explained that the necessary focus on areas incurring substantial losses was comparable to a family managing significant finances.

He added that he had become a target precisely because he resisted being a compliant prime minister and actively blocked the misuse of public funds. When questioned about a potential run for the presidency, Bolojan responded that he remains an active individual committed to acting in Romania’s best interest, suggesting that if the opportunity had existed, he could have pursued it. The no-confidence vote against his government is scheduled for May 5.

The motion was tabled by the PSD, the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the parliamentary group MIR – Romania First. This vote followed the withdrawal of support from the PSD, the largest party within the ruling four-party coalition, which initially took office last June.

  1. What would the PNL’s governing platform look like if they remain in power without the support of the PSD?
