Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

During a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev urged attendees to view history not as a set of slogans, but as a living record. He suggested that Bulgaria is navigating a period of complexity comparable to that experienced by Bulgarians in 1876, calling for an examination beyond traditional commemorative rhetoric.

Prof. Valchev stated that the historical context of 1876 represented numerous efforts by Bulgarians to achieve political liberation, an endeavor spanning the entire nineteenth century, including attempts to leverage international Balkan and European conflicts. He noted that after facing multiple unsuccessful attempts, the realization dawned that self-determination was necessary for dignity.

The uprising, therefore, exemplified a profound desire to assume control of their own destiny—a crucial lesson for the present time. He outlined several key takeaways from this history. First, the need for self-responsibility is paramount, especially when global conflicts are raging and the younger generation struggles with a sense of community.

Second, such commemorations must initiate a continuous commitment to preserving memory by recounting historical events and reviving family narratives. Finally, the prof emphasized placing belief in the youth, mirroring how the younger generation spearheaded the efforts of that era. Concluding his remarks, the rector stressed that while self-sacrifice is one thing, accepting the responsibility of guiding the community is another.

He asserted that during those critical days, the society functioned as a unit, and it remains the duty of the community to organize the state.

  1. It is sobering to hear the call to view history not as a fixed narrative, but as an ongoing process informing the present.

  2. What specific contemporary issues does the Rector believe are comparable to the challenges faced during the April Uprising of 1876?
