Sofia Leader Slams Mladost Property Deal as Corrupt

Boris Bonev, Chair of Spasi Sofia, publicly criticized a development report concerning properties in the Mladost district of Sofia, labeling the proposal as potentially “scandalous and corrupt.” Speaking ahead of a Sofia Municipal Council session, Bonev stated that the plan involves constructing a 22-story building with an estimated 60,000 square meters of gross floor area. He argued that the initiative represents a significant corruption deal being advanced contrary to the public interest. Bonev expressed concern that the high-density development would dramatically alter one of the busiest intersections in Mladost.

He asserted that the proposal reflects a pattern of overdevelopment that contradicts the wishes of local residents, who he stated have historically supported politicians advocating for curbing such growth. Adding to the debate, Spasi Sofia municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova highlighted the ownership structure, noting that the Sofia Municipality holds 92% of the property, suggesting that the municipality should logically dictate the terms for any future development. Bonev also criticized political figures, including Mayor Vassil Terziev, for failing to take a definitive public stance on the issue.

He pointed out that the submitted report mirrors a proposal from a previous council term, which was reportedly withdrawn following public opposition. Bonev suggested that the current governance environment allows for opportunistic actions. The controversy centers on the perceived conflict between large-scale commercial development and community interest within the Mladost area of Sofia.
