Following a statement from the Interior Ministry’s acting Secretary General, Georgi Kandev, alleging pressure to step down, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev issued a public response. On Facebook, Vassilev commented that the situation suggested that in Bulgaria, authorities attempt to undermine someone immediately after doing their job. Vassilev described the alleged threats against Secretary General Kandev as highly problematic.
He stated that achieving a prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria would necessitate the immediate replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and a systemic overhaul of the judiciary. His comments were accompanied by a photograph of Kandev, captioned with the message, “I won’t go home.”
Earlier on Friday, Kandev posted a video message confirming that he had received a directive to retire but asserted that he would not yield to threats or clandestine negotiations. Kandev detailed that he had been informed that several individuals, including one nicknamed “Kartofa,” had provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office on Thursday.
The exchange highlights escalating tensions within the Ministry. Vassilev’s statements suggest a deep institutional conflict, asserting that the current judicial structure requires fundamental change. Kandev’s public defiance, meanwhile, directly addresses the allegations of misconduct, pointing to the false testimonies as evidence of an effort to remove him from his post.
The differing accounts present contrasting narratives regarding the integrity of the processes and the professional conduct of the parties involved.
