-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural sitting of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group issued a declaration stating its support for a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to serve as the Chair. According to MP Toma Bikov, this backing stems from Progressive Bulgaria’s victory in the recent elections. Bikov clarified that the gesture was intended not as a negotiation point or a specific political mandate, but rather as an effort to revive established parliamentary traditions and elevate the overall political standard within the assembly.

The group emphasized that improving the political standard does not negate the right to political disagreement. Instead, it requires the opposition to effectively represent citizens with differing views and ensure their freedom of expression. On a broader note, GERB-UDF criticized the political climate in Bulgaria, noting that the country has experienced coalition governments over the past twelve years, culminating in a period of chronic political instability and an inability for parliamentary forces to form a stable administration over the last five years.

Bikov pointed out that this instability occurred despite the necessity for stable decision-making amidst a volatile geopolitical environment and the requirement for systemic reforms. The group also addressed fiscal policy, criticizing the normalization of budget deficits. Furthermore, Bikov reiterated previous warnings from the udf regarding the need to raise the level of political debate, cautioning that personal attacks and scandals erode public trust in the entire political system.
