-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced its support for a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to assume the role of Chair. According to MP Toma Bikov, the group indicated this support was based on Progressive Bulgaria’s victory in the recent elections. Bikov stated that this gesture should be viewed not as a negotiation tactic or a specific political message, but rather as an effort to restore a perceived parliamentary tradition and elevate the overall political standard within the assembly.

Bikov further elaborated that maintaining a higher political standard does not negate political disagreement; rather, it requires the opposition to effectively represent citizens with views differing from the parliamentary majority, ensuring their right to express those views openly. On a broader note, GERB-UDF criticized the political trajectory of Bulgaria, noting that the country has been governed by coalition governments over the last twelve years, with the last five years marked by chronic political instability and an inability among parliamentary forces to establish a stable administration. Bikov argued that this instability persisted despite the necessity for stable decisions in an unpredictable geopolitical environment and the need for systemic reforms.

He also criticized fiscal policies that have treated budget deficits as routine. The group reiterated its past warnings that personal attacks and scandals undermine public trust in the entire political system and its institutions.
