Without Borders Observes Deterioration of Media Freedom Across Most Balkan Countries

Reporters Without Borders’ annual World Press Freedom Index indicates a general deterioration of media freedom across most countries in the Balkan region. While some nations show progress, others face significant challenges to press independence. Kosovo stands out for marked improvement, rising 15 places, though the country remains low in global rankings.

Croatia, Romania, and Greece have also recorded improvements, contrasting with declines seen in several other nations, including Bulgaria, which dropped one position to 71st. The assessment reveals varied threats to media operations. Slovenia, despite dropping three places, remains the regional leader in press freedom, though the organization notes that defamation remains a criminal offense.

Other nations face systemic issues: Romania struggles with funding transparency and political interference in public broadcasting, while Bulgaria is characterized by fragile and unstable press freedom. Several other countries are classified as “problematic.” In North Macedonia, while the environment is generally favorable, disinformation and a lack of professionalism are eroding public trust. Montenegro’s press freedom is threatened by political interference and economic pressure.

The report highlights that despite constitutional guarantees, political and economic interests often exert significant influence over media outlets across the region. Overall, the index points to persistent challenges to journalistic autonomy. Issues such as government pressure, organized crime attacks, and political intimidation continue to undermine press freedom across numerous countries, requiring sustained attention to safeguard democratic discourse.

  1. It’s concerning to see the overall decline in media freedom across the Balkans, even with Kosovo showing improvement.
