An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation has been established in Novi Sad, a northern Serbian city, according to local media reports on Friday. Dusan Bajatovic, the director of Srbijagaz and a senior official of the Socialist Party of Serbia, has been appointed as the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Patriarch Porfiry, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.
During the event, Bajatovic addressed the relationship between Serbia and Russia. He stated that while Serbs recognize a deep connection rooted in shared Orthodox heritage, he noted that much remains unknown about Russia’s culture, scientific advancements, and natural beauty. He mentioned that the Russian Historical Society was established with assistance from Aleksandar Vulin, with the stated aim of preserving historical accuracy.
Bajatovic further announced plans for enhanced cultural and academic cooperation. He emphasized the importance of establishing student exchanges and educational partnerships between Russia and Serbia. He stated that the initiative aimed to promote knowledge about Russia, countering the belief that all cultural knowledge originates solely from Western sources.
The establishment of the consulate in Novi Sad signals a renewed focus on deepening bilateral ties through cultural and educational means.
