Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly expressed support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, stating that the entire caretaker government stands with him. Gurov’s comments followed a statement from Kandev, in which he alleged that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimony presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one nicknamed “Kartofa.”
In his address, Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” He asserted that a conspiracy was underway against the Secretary General following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and secure millions of euros intended to undermine elections. The Prime Minister indicated that a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” are implicated in this alleged conspiracy.
Gurov described the situation as revenge and a warning to those willing to act courageously within the law. Gurov specifically named the Sofia City Prosecution Office and prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, alleging a connection between Rusinova and Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov, who is described as a figure connected to influencing the Bulgarian judiciary and currently a fugitive. Furthermore, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had previously stated that in 2021, Rusinova accompanied Petrov on a trip to North Macedonia.
Dechev also reported that Rusinova reportedly crossed the border multiple times on these occasions, accompanied by several individuals, sometimes including Petrov. Gurov concluded by issuing a public challenge, stating that the government and the public are not intimidated by those he addressed.
