Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov made the announcement via a personal Facebook post, stating that he intends to dedicate his full attention and energy exclusively to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their joint efforts while resigning from the top executive body of GERB.
This departure follows a period of political activity for the party, which recorded its lowest result of 13.38% in the snap parliamentary elections held on April 19. Days after the vote, Todorov appeared at a press conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where he emphasized the necessity for GERB to maintain its “right-wing and anti-corruption profile.”
The timing of the resignation is notable as Todorov had only recently been re-elected to the Commission, while the party’s National Assembly had unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as the party leader. Following the election, Borissov announced a strategic tandem involving Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, to collaborate with party structures.
GERB formally accepted Todorov’s decision through a statement on Facebook, characterizing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged Todorov’s significant contributions to the success of GERB in Stara Zagora, while also noting that GERB was conducting an internal analysis to identify areas for necessary improvement within its operations.
