A national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising is scheduled for Monday at the Prof. Marin Drinov Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). The event will take place under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova.
The day’s observances begin at 10:00 am at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral, where Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil will officiate a memorial prayer service for the victims of the uprising. Following this, representatives from the academic community will participate in a procession led by President Iotova and Patriarch Daniil toward the BAS building. The commemorative assembly will officially open with remarks from BAS President Evelina Slavcheva, followed by a blessing from Patriarch Daniil.
Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev is scheduled to address the gathering. A key presentation will be delivered by Academician Ivan Ilchev, whose report is titled “The Uprising That Returned Bulgaria to the Map of Europe.” President Iotova will also provide a welcoming speech.
The event is hosted by Corresponding Member Atanas Semov of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of BAS. To mark this significant anniversary, a National Initiative Committee was formed by the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members, with the support of BAS leadership. BAS has also issued a national calendar of events for all participants in the commemorative activities throughout Sofia.
