Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is set to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.

The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibit features an extensive collection of over 130 historical documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide comprehensive documentation detailing the preparation, course, suppression, and lasting consequences of the historical uprising.

Furthermore, the documents offer insights into the international response to the events, while included Ottoman records present the perspectives of both local and central Ottoman authorities of the time. Among the authors featured are prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The exhibition showcases a mix of well-known and previously undisclosed documents, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction.

The display underscores a significant moment in Bulgarian cultural history. The exhibition was formally launched in Sofia on April 20, held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. The presentation serves as a detailed archival resource, allowing the public to examine primary source materials related to this pivotal national struggle.
