Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey, presented by the European Commission, indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the shift from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the European currency, 49% of respondents view it positively for Bulgaria, while 43% hold a negative outlook. Furthermore, a substantial 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro benefits the European Union as a whole.

However, concerns persist regarding the economic impact; a majority (66%) anticipate that the euro will lead to increased inflation in Bulgaria, compared to 21% who expect price stability. On a personal level, 46% expect a positive effect from the euro, while 42% foresee negative consequences. In a separate report concerning Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, the European Commission advises that authorities must maintain intensive price monitoring.

This monitoring should focus on ensuring accurate price display, preventing unjustified price hikes, and upholding consumer protection and competition laws. The report stresses that such monitoring must be sustained over a long period in future enlargements. The Commission also suggests implementing voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to a full year.

To facilitate the process, the report recommends that joining countries adopt best practices, such as providing businesses with coin rolls rather than “starter kits.” Ultimately, the Commission concludes that robust communication and public awareness campaigns are critical components for ensuring a successful transition to the euro for Bulgarians.
