Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capabilities for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment. According to the hospital’s press center, five complete sets of advanced gear were purchased, bolstering the facility’s ability to transport critically ill and injured patients over long distances. This new equipment inventory includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators, and suction pumps.

These systems are designed to maintain intensive care and resuscitation readiness throughout the duration of air transport. With this enhancement, the MMA can now manage the simultaneous air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients requiring continuous, highly specialized treatment during flight. The purchased technology is certified for immediate onboard aircraft use, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies.

The MMA remains the only hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with trained personnel dedicated to air medical evacuation. Working closely with the Bulgarian Air Force, the academy’s teams are prepared to respond to large-scale incidents, including mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts, requiring the swift evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the MMA, noted that this equipment upgrade substantially enhances the capacity to provide care in extreme conditions.

He stressed that effective air medical evacuation depends not only on advanced technology but also on highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments. To maintain peak readiness, medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios.
