Bulgarians Join EU Citizens’ Crisis Preparedness Online Debate

One hundred fifty citizens from across all European Union member states convened for the second session of the European Citizens’ Panel on Preparedness from April 24 to 26. The discussions aim to develop concrete strategies for enhancing EU readiness against future crises, ensuring that actions taken under the EU preparedness union strategy are inclusive and directly responsive to the needs of the populace. Participants are deepening their focus on key priorities previously identified during discussions held in March.

These critical areas include bolstering citizen engagement, promoting education and solidarity, ensuring communication integrity—specifically addressing the spread of disinformation and misinformation—and refining crisis management protocols across Europe. Representing Bulgaria, four Bulgarians are participating in the dialogue, with delegates joining from Sofia, Burgas, Isperih, and Reberkovo. Antoaneta Petkova, representing Reberkovo, noted that the group, which includes representatives from Germany, Italy, and Czechia, hopes to continue advancing proposals such as comprehensive educational training on crisis response, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

She added that four additional concepts related to disaster and crisis response will also be debated. The panel’s mandate is to ensure that future preparedness measures are robust and citizen-centered. The plenary session is available for live viewing via the panel’s official website.
