The RitmiKKa folk dance troupe from Hamburg, Germany, is scheduled to participate in the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, taking place in Munich from May 15 to 17. Kamen Kunev, the long-time dancer, headmaster, and choreographer of the group, noted that the troupe will perform a piece originally choreographed by Zahari Andreev approximately 60 years ago. Kunev stated that selecting this particular dance reflects the leadership’s commitment to ensuring the work of celebrated figures in the performing arts remains visible.
He emphasized the enduring nature of such traditions, noting that the choreography embodies the communal spirit of a village square. According to Kunev, the performance aims to illustrate how people historically gathered in the evenings around a village fire for music, songs, and dance. He added that participating in the festival serves to demonstrate that the spirit of unity persists, regardless of physical location.
The troupe will debut in brand new costumes, which were custom-sewn for the event by fashion designer Nikolay Kolev. Preparations for the performance required an entire season of rigorous rehearsals. The Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance festival is dedicated to amateur folk ensembles performing outside of Bulgaria.
The initiative was pioneered by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted the first and tenth editions. For the 11th installment in Munich, organizers anticipate participation from over 100 dance ensembles and an attendance of more than 4,000 guests. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is serving as the official media partner for the event.
