Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly stated his and the entire caretaker government’s support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov asserted that the general public would also support Kandev. Gurov’s comments followed a statement from Kandev, in which he alleged that he was being pressured to resign due to false testimony provided against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one referred to as “Kartofa.” In Gurov’s view, the situation represents a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” The Prime Minister stated that a conspiracy has emerged following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and the seizure of millions of euros intended to undermine elections.
Gurov indicated that a former police chief and the businessman nicknamed “Kartofa” are allegedly involved in this conspiracy. He characterized the actions as revenge and a warning to those who work lawfully and bravely. Gurov specifically named the Sofia City Prosecution Office and prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who he linked to Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov and the prosecutor overseeing the caretaker government.
Adding to the context, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had previously reported that in 2021, Rusinova traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia. Dechev also mentioned that, according to information at the Interior Ministry, Rusinova repeatedly crossed the border on trips accompanied by four or five individuals, sometimes including Petrov.
