Iotova: Legislature Should Prioritize Budget Adoption

Addressing the newly sworn-in members of the 52nd National Assembly, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova emphasized that the immediate priority for the legislature must be the passage of the 2026 national budget. She characterized the extension of the 2025 budget as a significant indication of ongoing governmental impasse, warning that any further delay risks plunging citizens, businesses, municipalities, and institutions into stagnation and unpredictability. Iotova stressed that while recovery will be challenging, concerted effort is necessary to restore public confidence in Bulgarian institutions.

She noted that citizens have mandated a single political force, Progressive Bulgaria, expecting stable governance, adherence to the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution, and robust action against corruption. In her address, the President also addressed Bulgaria’s role within the European Union. Iotova urged the nation to adopt a more assertive posture within the EU framework.

She stated that Bulgaria’s perspective and influence are valuable, particularly concerning the security of the EU’s external borders and the development of the Western Balkans. According to Iotova, Bulgaria has the capacity to serve as a key economic hub for the future, contributing essential viewpoints necessary for Europe to maintain its international leadership and high standards of living.
