Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At the national conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov stated that Bulgarians should strive to embody the spirit of the ordinary citizens who became historical heroes. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) at the Panagyurishte History Museum, emphasized that the anniversary should prompt national reflection on unity and pride. Gagov noted that the commemorations coincided with an election campaign, drawing a contrast between contemporary political figures and those of the past, a comparison he stated was “not in favour of our present day.” He argued that the anniversary should serve two primary purposes: establishing it as a genuinely national commemoration, mirroring the aspirations of the original uprising, and enabling the public to view history as a source of national pride.

According to the mayor, Bulgarians currently experience a “deficit of pride,” making the anniversary an opportunity to recall the achievements of their ancestors. He drew a distinction between the young revolutionaries of 1876 and modern youth, observing that while today’s generation engages with social media, their predecessors were preparing for sacrifice. Gagov stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not mythological figures but real individuals, urging that their legacy be understood on a human level.

He concluded by calling for Bulgarians to uphold the example set by those “ordinary people whom history made great.” This conference is part of a larger series of discussions organized by BTA as part of the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative.

  1. It’s interesting to see how civic leaders connect historical movements to contemporary national identity.
