Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At the national conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees, urging Bulgarians to become worthy successors to the ordinary citizens who became national heroes. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) at the Panagyurishte History Museum, emphasized that the commemoration should serve as a moment for national reflection and pride. Gagov noted that the anniversary falls during an election period, drawing a contrast between contemporary political figures and the historical leaders of the uprising, a comparison he stated was “not in favour of our present day.” He argued that the celebration must achieve two goals: establishing a truly national commemoration, mirroring the original aims of the uprising, and helping the public reconnect with history as a source of collective pride.

The mayor asserted that Bulgarians currently suffer from a “deficit of pride,” and the anniversary provides an opportunity to recall the achievements of their ancestors, stressing that modern generations share the same foundational roots. He drew a contrast between the young revolutionaries of 1876, who prepared for sacrifice, and today’s youth, whose focus is often on social media. Gagov stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not mythological figures but tangible individuals.

He called for their legacy to be understood on a human level, stating, “They are us,” and urging Bulgarians to emulate the example set by those ordinary people who achieved greatness through their actions. This conference is part of a larger BTA initiative, “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe,” marking the significance of the uprising in Bulgarian history.
