Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capacity for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment. According to the hospital’s press center, five complete sets of advanced systems were purchased. This new equipment includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and additional units such as defibrillators and suction pumps.

These integrated systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained during extended-distance patient transport. With this capability, the MMA can now conduct the simultaneous air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized treatment while airborne. The acquired equipment is certified for use onboard aircraft and is immediately deployable, ensuring rapid response capabilities in emergency scenarios.

The MMA remains the sole facility in Bulgaria combining specialized medical equipment with trained personnel for air medical evacuation services. Working closely with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are equipped to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts that necessitate the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. Prof.

Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, noted that the new equipment substantially enhances the ability to provide advanced medical care in challenging environments. He emphasized that effective air medical evacuation relies equally on sophisticated technology and highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk settings. To maintain operational readiness, medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various complex scenarios.
