Ministry Secretary General “Under Pressure”, Politicians See Revenge for Crackdown on Electoral Crime

The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, stated on Friday that he had been subjected to pressure. In a video posted on Facebook, Kandev reported receiving multiple calls on Thursday, some from obscured numbers via a mobile application. He alleged that during this time, he was informed that an individual known as “Kartofa” and his associates were presenting false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO).

Kandev further claimed that this effort was allegedly orchestrated by a former official within the Ministry. In response to the situation, Prime Minister Andrey Gurov expressed support for Kandev, describing the alleged pressure at the SCPO as a “vendetta.” Gurov criticized the prosecutor overseeing the proceedings, characterizing the situation as undermining democratic processes. Interior Minister Emil Dechev also voiced support for Kandev, asserting that “old cops” were employing tactics intended to undermine the secretary general.

Political opposition also weighed in. Assen Vassilev criticized the threats against Kandev as scandalous, suggesting systemic changes were necessary for a just Bulgaria. Meanwhile, the Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors of being utilized to target officials involved in institutional reform.

The accusations highlighted significant internal tension within the governmental structure. Kandev’s statements prompted him to publicly question the testimony presented at the SCPO and the motives behind the actions taken against him within the ministry. The consistent support from the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister underscored a unified front defending the actions of the secretary general.
