Students Announce New Major Protest in May

Students in Serbia have indicated plans for a large-scale, new protest scheduled for May, according to posts shared on the X platform by accounts associated with the students. These announcements suggest an intention to organize a demonstration similar in scale to the mass anti-government protests that have occurred over the last eighteen months. The initial impetus for the unrest stemmed from a significant incident on November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at a newly renovated railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 fatalities and several injuries.

In subsequent communications, the students referenced dates from previous major demonstrations, specifically citing December 22, 2024, at Belgrade’s Slavija Square, alongside March 15 and June 28, 2025, also in Belgrade. They stated that “this series will soon continue,” accompanied by the phrase, “See you soon!”

This recurring message echoes earlier social media posts from late 2024, when the students began blocking universities and suspending classes in solidarity with the victims of the November 1 tragedy. More recently, on May 5, 2025, the students explicitly called for early parliamentary elections in Serbia.

The current call for a new demonstration is expected sometime in May, though no definitive date has been provided to date.
