Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

To mark the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, students from Sofia schools participated in a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes.” The initiative, organized by the Sofia Municipality, took place within Boris Garden Park, focusing on the Prominent Bulgarians alley. Divided into teams, the participating students engaged in an immersive experience that required them to search for monuments dedicated to national heroes and answer questions pertaining to Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event aims to connect the commemoration of this historic act of courage with experiential learning, moving history beyond traditional classroom settings.

The structured game guided the students along routes linking to revolutionary figures such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. As the teams followed these historical footsteps, they gathered pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising by successfully answering historical inquiries. Upon concluding the walk, each team composed a short message addressed to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on the knowledge they had gained.

The concept for the game was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, implemented in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The activity successfully blended historical education with community engagement for the students.
