The Change: We Are Very Far from Becoming One Party with Yes, Bulgaria

Nikolay Denkov, former prime minister and deputy leader of Continue the Change (CC), stated that the political landscape suggests a significant distance from forming a single party encompassing Yes, Bulgaria. While acknowledging shared objectives with Yes, Bulgaria, Denkov indicated that the parties possess differing views on the methods for achieving these goals. CC has operated as a coalition partner with Yes, Bulgaria and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria since 2023, though no formal coalition agreement is in place.

Last week, the National Council of Yes, Bulgaria passed a resolution requiring the party to propose a formal coalition agreement and outlined a roadmap for establishing a common political entity based on the existing coalition. Denkov commented on the proposals, stating, “Two alternatives are being proposed, both of which seem very extreme. One is to create a common party at the proposal of Yes, Bulgaria, and the other is that we are divorcing and will not speak to each other.” He argued that the proposed common party structure would unduly limit support to urban voters.

Denkov clarified that the situation does not imply a separation, asserting, “We are not talking about a divorce, but about the fact that we can work together while each side develops its own strengths.” He also noted that the parties have agreed to nominate a joint candidate for the presidential elections. Regarding the formation of separate parliamentary groups for CC and Yes, Bulgaria, Denkov deferred the decision to the Members of Parliament. This statement follows recent actions where Ivaylo Mirchev and Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-leaders of Yes, Bulgaria, reaffirmed that the coalition’s voter base favors consolidation into a unified political project involving Yes, Bulgaria.
