-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced its support for a candidate from Progressive Bulgaria to serve as the Chair of the Assembly. MP Toma Bikov stated that this endorsement was based on Progressive Bulgaria’s success in the latest elections. He clarified that this action was intended not as a negotiation tactic, but rather as an effort to revitalize established parliamentary traditions and elevate the overall political standard within the institution.

Bikov elaborated that upholding a higher political standard does not negate political disagreement; rather, it mandates that the opposition effectively represents citizens with differing viewpoints, ensuring their right to express those views openly. He asserted that this representation would be the primary focus of the group in the current parliament. The GERB-UDF group also addressed the political landscape of Bulgaria, criticizing the governance structure over the past decade.

Bikov noted that while the country has been managed by coalition governments for the last twelve years, the most recent five years have been marked by chronic political instability and an inability among parliamentary forces to form a stable administration. He emphasized that this instability occurred despite the need for consistent decision-making in a volatile geopolitical environment and the necessity of systemic reforms. Furthermore, the group expressed concern over the deterioration of public discourse, warning that personal attacks and scandals erode trust in the entire political system.

Bikov concluded by reiterating the group’s call for a higher level of political debate within Bulgaria.
