President Iliana Iotova stated that the Bulgarian community centres, which have endured for 170 years largely due to the efforts of Bulgarian patriots and cultural figures, maintain a bright future in the 21st century. She made these remarks during a meeting with the National Representative Committee on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the National Community Centres. According to the Presidential press service, community centres played a vital role in the formation of the Bulgarian community long before the re-emergence of the Bulgarian State.
The meeting was attended by Committee Chair Prof. Nikolay Doynov, other Committee members, and representatives from local and institutional authorities, alongside media personnel. Discussions focused on the need for measures concerning the financing of public community centres, as well as the conservation and renovation of existing building funds.
Attendees reviewed the legal framework governing the operation of these centres and expressed the desire of Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public community centres. Currently, only a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria, operates in Edirne. Iotova emphasized that the further development of Bulgarian community centres should be considered a priority for all national institutions.
Participants expressed hope that the National Assembly and the new government will prioritize cultural policies. Committee representatives commended the President for her consistent support of the community centres’ initiatives. The agenda also addressed organizational matters related to the anniversary celebrations, to which Iotova pledged the full support of the Presidential institution.
