Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capabilities for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment. The purchase includes five complete sets of advanced machinery, such as vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators, and suction pumps. This new equipment ensures that intensive care and resuscitation readiness can be maintained throughout extended, long-distance patient transports.

With these resources, the MMA is now capable of conducting simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients requiring continuous, highly specialized treatment while airborne. The purchased systems are certified for onboard aircraft use, allowing for immediate integration into emergency response protocols. The MMA remains the sole facility in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with dedicated, trained teams for air medical evacuation.

In coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its personnel are prepared to respond to large-scale incidents, including mass disasters, major accidents, and military conflicts, requiring the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. Prof. Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, noted that the new technology substantially enhances the ability to provide advanced medical care in challenging environments.

He emphasized that effective air medical evacuation relies equally on cutting-edge technology and highly trained teams capable of operating effectively in dynamic, high-risk settings. To maintain operational readiness, the medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various complex scenarios.
