Iotova: Legislature Should Prioritize Budget Adoption

Addressing the newly sworn-in members of Parliament during the inaugural sitting of the 52nd National Assembly, President Iliana Iotova emphasized that passing the 2026 national budget is a critical function required of the legislature. She characterized the extension of the 2025 budget as a significant indication of past governmental impasse. The head of state warned that any continued delay risks causing stagnation and unpredictability for Bulgarian citizens, businesses, municipalities, and state institutions.

Iotova stated that restoring public confidence in Bulgarian institutions will require sustained, concerted efforts across all branches of government. She noted that citizens had entrusted the mandate to Progressive Bulgaria with expectations of stable governance, adherence to the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution, and rigorous action against corruption. Shifting focus to the international stage, the President urged Bulgaria to adopt a more assertive role within the European Union.

Iotova argued that after nineteen years of EU membership, Bulgaria’s perspective must be actively heard. She asserted that the nation possesses valuable input concerning the security of the EU’s external borders and the development of the Western Balkans. According to Iotova, Bulgaria is positioned to contribute significantly to Europe regaining its international standing and maintaining high standards for its citizens.
