At a national conference held at the Panagyurishte History Museum, Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. Gagov stated that the commemoration of the April Uprising should prompt national reflection on unity and pride. He noted that the timing of the anniversary coincided with an election campaign, drawing a comparison between contemporary political figures and those of the past, a comparison he stated was unfavorable to the present day.
According to Gagov, the anniversary should serve two primary functions: to establish it as a truly national commemoration, mirroring the aspirations of the uprising itself, and to enable the public to revisit history as a source of national pride. He suggested that Bulgarians currently exhibit a “deficit of pride,” and that the anniversary offers an opportunity to recall the achievements of their ancestors, emphasizing that current generations share the same national roots. The mayor contrasted the revolutionary youth of 1876 with modern youth, observing that while today’s generation often focuses on social media, their predecessors were preparing for sacrifice.
Gagov stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not mythical figures but tangible individuals, urging that their legacy be understood in human terms. He concluded by calling on Bulgarians to emulate the example set by these “ordinary people whom history made great.”
The conference is part of a broader series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to observe the 150th anniversary. This initiative falls under BTA’s larger effort, “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe,” involving the Bulgarian National Television and the Bulgarian National Radio.
