During his participation at the Delphi Economic Forum, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed the region’s energy challenges. Regarding aviation, Tzitzikostas stated that the European Union possesses sufficient reserves of aviation fuel and can maintain emergency supplies for a period of up to three months. He attributed recent flight cancellations by some airlines primarily to escalating fuel costs rather than genuine supply shortages.
The Commissioner characterized the current energy situation as historically significant and predicted a challenging summer period ahead. He also cautioned that the global ramifications could be severe if the conflict in the Middle East does not reach a swift conclusion. In related security matters, Tzitzikostas highlighted the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically important sites across Europe.
Furthermore, he forecast a notable decline in tourist travel originating from Asia destined for Europe. The Delphi Forum itself is a large-scale event continuing through Saturday, April 25. It features over 200 discussions and panels, drawing approximately 1,200 international speakers.
Participants represent a diverse group, including government officials, academic experts, and business leaders, with discussions focusing on geopolitics, economic trends, and technological shifts.
